Sansenes rike
This film was based on a real event that took place in the 1930’s in Japan (when Munch was still alive too). Although by many seen as pornographic because of all the explicit sex scenes, it does not fit that description. The film is erotic, but with a tension that mounts and keeps you feeling very uneasy and more and more worried about the lovers. You feel the obsession getting out of hand and you feel as if you would like to save them. The roles switch as the woman who was first a servant and a prostitute, becomes the feverish master in this relationship. The end is tragic.
My painting Hierarchy was inspired by a film still from this movie and also re-used for one of the drawings in Venus and Adonis, though in this case the attraction is not mutual, as Venus is obsessed with Adonis, but he is not with her.
«Oshima’s film widens and deepens the sensual realm.» Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
