Lasse Marhaug: Something Must Happen!

Since the early 1990s Marhaug has been one of the most active artists on the Norwegian noise/experimental music scene. As a performer and composer he has contributed to well over 300 CD releases over the years, as well as extensive touring worldwide. He has collaborated with many artists, composing music for theatre, dance, installations, cinema and video. He has also worked as a graphic designer, photographer and illustrator in parallel to his sound work. Marhaug has now begun to create films which combine his skills in the sonic and visual worlds, we are proud to present three of his pieces as world premieres here.

Goodbye Camera, 2019, digital, 6min

A film in progress. A fond «adieu» to a dying piece of equipment, as the electronic/mechanical functions start to break down, Marhaug cajoles his camera into creating one last film.

The Practice of Love, 2019, digital, 11min

Produced in collaboration with the singer and writer Jenny Hval, this film is a conversation and a monologue, a study of intimacy; abstract, mysterious and tactile.

Consisting entirely of still images and concentrating on a single character played by dancer Ingrid Haakstad. The film moves between close-ups of simple, everyday movements, abstract sequences and written text; a study of love as an attempt to communicate through the means of the body, the voice, language and sound.

Something Must Happen, 2019, digital, 23min

A meditation on a long North Norwegian winter. Static shots begin the piece before the camera moves in; cutting up and distorting the landscape. Marhaug uses the autobiographical aspect of his story as a filter to examine how, despite isolation, art and music is ultimately a communal experience. The soundtrack is as important as the images. The film starts in near silence and slowly builds to a frenetic finale. A spoken letter is woven throughout, written by Jenny Hval and voiced by Vivian Wang.
