Dear Quvenzhané Wallis,
Your performance as Hushpuppy has inspired me greatly in my acting studies. I was truly moved by your ability… Stop. Let me put it this way: You were only 6 years old at the time! 1-2-3-4-5-6! How did you do it? Why am I still thinking about your performance (when the movie came out in 2013)? I’ve thought of 1-2-3-4-5-6 reasons:

1. You let your breath go all the way down into your stomach. I believe it’s essential to get the body activated, not just acting with the face, you know, acting with everything, the whole instrument.
2. You have a complete lack of self-consciousness when you’re working. Were you scared when you had to stick your arm into the flooded river filled with crocodiles and dead animals?
3. And: Did you have to work on letting go of your mind? Or did you just forget the camera was there?
4. The most unforgettable scene (to me) was: Your father screams: Beast it! And the whole crowd starts crying: Beast it, beast it, beast it! And you’re sitting there with a giant crab, trying to break it in two with your small hands as they’re all yelling at you, and then, suddenly: BOOM. You break it open, and you eat, like an animal, and you get up on the table, flex your muscles and scream. Primal tiny human scream. So I’m sitting there, watching you on the screen, thinking: You’re devoting yourself completely to the situation in the scene. You canalize all of your energy into that scream. You take it seriously.
5. You seem to have a profound understanding of the character, the character’s universe and her relationship to her father. It is almost as if I can see what you’re thinking. You stay alert, listening to every move Hushpuppy’s father makes. If he makes an unexpected movement, you react instinctively.
6. Thanks for reminding me to be fearless. I wish you all the best and hope that you stay connected to your sincerity as you grow older, and I’ll try to do the same.
